What is your favorite material to use to make rosettes? Mine is ... BACON!
We recently we had a small family gathering to celebrated my huband's 50th birthday. It was a beautiful fall day so we ate on the porch. I served one of my huge "signature" tossed salads, along with big bowls of homemade potato soup and The Pioneer Woman's famous bread. She named it "The Bread". Chris asked me to bake a Pumpkin Rum cake for his birthday. Everyone served themselves a large bowl of soup, then topped it off as they chose with grated cheese, green onion, parsley flakes, sour cream, chopped jalapenos and course black pepper, and to top it all off, a bacon rose. Yum... They were so fun and easy to make. Simply take a bacon strip, just as you would a strip of fabric or ribbon, and twist and turn to form the rose. Then just pop it into a mini-muffin tin and bake. The picture of the rose above is a little under-cooked. I made them a day ahead and then reheated just before the party to get them hot and crispy.
These are so yummy. I even caught some of the guys popping the whole rose in their mouth and eating them like a snack. Unfortunately I got caught up in the festivities and forgot to take pictures of the finished product. I wanted to show how yummy the bowls of soup look with all the toppings. Oh well, sounds like a good excuse for me to have to make more...
Here is a picture of the Pumpkin Rum cake.
Chris shares a birthday with his dad (his dad's is Oct 23rd, Chris's is Oct 25th), so we celebrate them together.
This is a picture of Chris, his mom & dad.
This is sister Robin and some of her bunch. (son Daniel, daughter-in-law T, and son Halem) Daughter Violet was off at college, working hard while we partied. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?)
This is Robin's crew again along with my & Robin's dad (PawPaw) on the far right.
Here Chris shows some of the birthday pictures nephews Christopher & Adam made for him.
Fooie ... I forgot to take pictures of the invitations and party favors (always my favorite part of a party). For the invitations I made a little book with pictures of Chris's birthday parties as a child. I put them in a cellophane bag and sealed them with a vintage child's spun cotton animal cupcake topper. Some of the pictures I used in the books are below. For the party favors, I took huge over sized pill boxes (that said OVRDHLL- one letter on each day of the week's section). Instead of pills, I filled them with candy then put them in a cellophane bag tied with a big ribbon. I attached a card I made with the following slogan ... "The Joy is the Journey". Here is a copy of the photo used for the cards. I'm so happy to have such a wonderful husband. He makes life fun. I hope he has at least 50 more.
